A highly focused transducer is to the left, it is being excited in continuous wave mode. The ultrasound is propagating from left to right. The acoustic field is represented in pseudo color. Each color is mapped to -3 dB of ultrasound in water. The highest intensity region or the focal zone is mapped with white color. The interference pattern is visible both in near field and field. There is a strong side lobe caused by a defect in the matching layer propagating towards the top. This cannot be ordinarily detected with a hydrophone.
